Asthma is a chronic lung disease that can cause a person to have breathing
problems called asthma “attacks” or episodes. In an episode, a person’s
airways become narrowed when they react to something in the environment,
causing the lungs to get less air than normal. Symptoms of an asthma episode
include:
During asthma education, we discuss the most common triggers to asthma
“attacks”. We discuss how to avoid triggers or how to lessen their effects
on patients.
The patient is shown how to properly use a peak flow meter. We will explain
how the peak flow meter is used in conjunction with their specialized asthma
action plan; can provide the patient with a tool that helps to manage their
asthma more easily at home.
A demonstration and assessment of the patient’s technique in the use of
their asthma medications is discussed.
The patient is provided with a folder that contains many asthma resources
to help them learn more about asthma.
Class time runs about 1 hour in length. Individual or group sessions are
available.
