Nearly twenty-eight million people in the United States are affected by osteoporosis, which is responsible for 1.5 million fractures annually. Hi, this is Dr. Mike Bristow from the Alexandria Clinic. The word osteoporosis literally means, "porous bones". It occurs when bones lose an excessive amount of their protein and mineral content, particularly calcium.

Osteoporosis is often called the "silent" disease because bone loss occurs without symptoms. People who smoke or drink to much and don't get enough exercise have an increased chance of getting osteoporosis. Diet, figure type, race, age, gender, early menopause and lifestyle all have an effect on your body when it comes to osteoporosis.

Alexandria Clinic is here to help you with any concerns you may have about your health. If you are 40 or older, make an appointment at the Alexandria Clinic to get checked for this "silent" disease.

Alexandria Clinic, dedicated to your health and wellness.
