H1N1 Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by a new virus. Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu but include:

  • fever above 100 degrees F
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • stuffy nose
  • occasionally diarrhea and vomiting
  • body aches
  • headaches

If you have these symptoms, stay home, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and control your fever with Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen. Adults seek medical attention if you have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, pain or pressure in the chest, severe or persistent vomiting, confusion, sudden dizziness, or if the fever and cough disappear and then reappear. Children seek medical attention if you have fast breathing or trouble breathing, bluish skin color, become very irritable, not waking up or not interacting, fever with a rash, flu-like symptoms improve and then return with fever and worse cough.

You can help prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus by covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze throwing the tissue after each use. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve. Clean your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner. Avoid close contact with persons that are ill. Eat nutritiously and get enough sleep.
